The purpose of a multi-tool is to help you out with a number of tasks around the house and on the go – it should serve as an all in one replacement for a multitude of tools (e.g. screwdriver, knife, bottle opener, pliers, wire cutter, etc.). Around the house it will save you from opening the toolbox – on the road it will help you out of a jam you might otherwise not be prepared for.
The path for picking a multi-tool was fairly easy. My requirements were for it to come from one of the major brands known specifically for multi-tools: Leatherman, Gerber, and SOG. After a bit of research Leatherman – due to its history, focus on multi-tools, and 25 year warrantees – beat out the rest.
Leatherman produces a wide variety of multi-tools ranging in size: micro, small, mid-size, and large. While I own both the Leatherman Juice S2 (small) and the Leatherman Supertool 300 (large) – and have in the past owned the Leatherman Micra (micro) – there is just something about the mid-size multi-tool that seems to work best. It has enough tools but not too many – fits in the hand well – and can be carried out of the house when needed.
My choice is the Leatherman Skeletool CX. You could also opt to go for the base model (Leatherman Skeletool) however the CX version gives you the upgraded 154CM and Carbon Fiber insert – which while doesn’t saving you any weight – overall adds a really nice touch to the overall aesthetic.
The Skeletool packs into a 5oz package:
- Wire Cutters
- Universal Bit Driver
- Extra Bit Carrying Slot
- Bottle Opener/Carabiner
Unlike many other multi-tools that you will find out there – the Skeletool performs all of its functions well. Of particular highlight is the knife – about the best knife you will find on a multi-tool and the highly functional Bit Driver/Extra Bit Slot. To make full use of the Universal Bit Driver I recommend picking up the Leatherman Bit Set that includes 21 double ended bits of all types. This makes it so that you can customize your Skeletool any way you please.
If you’re interested in the lanyard – that is just Titan Survivorcord in Dragonscale tied in a snake knot pattern.
